Paper Title:
5G NETWORK AND NEWS COVERAGE IN NIGERIA: IMPLICATIONS, CHALLENGES AND PROSPECTS
Publised in OKO JOURNAL OF COMMUNICATION AND INFORMATION SCIENCE    (VOLUME 3 NUMBER 3 OCTOBER 2021)
Abstract:

This study is a content analytical study of three Nigeria Newspapers, viz: Punch, Daily Sun and the Guardian Newspapers, issued between September 2020 and September 2021. The study considered the prominence, position, repeat publication, space, etc given to news stories, editorials and articles with relation to the roll-out of the 5G Network in Nigeria, within the period of study. The Technological Determinism Theory (TDT) which is a reductionist theory that assumes that a society's technology determines the development of its social structures and cultural values was adopted for this study.  The study used a sample size of 278, generated through the use of Meyer’s Sample Size Determination Techniques. The data generated from this study are presented in tables and analysed in their percentage values. The finding shows that actually, the introduction of the 5G Network into news coverage in Nigeria will certainly come with its peculiar challenges, but the prospects and the benefits will outweigh the said challenges. Finally, the study recommends that the Federal Government should do well to enact enabling laws that would guide users, as well as strict control from NCC, and above all, it also recommends that the security of the media personnel, using the 5G evolution, should be made supreme.
