Abstract:

The library plays a vital role in tertiary institutions at providing information resources and services to support users in their studies and research activities. Library awareness in tertiary institutions is the medium in which the tertiary institutions   accomplish their objectives and goals. This paper discussed the academic library as the library found in the tertiary institutions, the basic functions of the academic libraries, the resources and service rendered by academic libraries, methods of creating library awareness The paper highlights the challenges of library awareness, some of the challenges include  inadequate funding, user’s attitude to library, staff attitude to work, low perception of the relevance of libraries by the authorities and users and conclusion and some recommendations were made.
