Publised in OKO JOURNAL OF COMMUNICATION AND INFORMATION SCIENCE    (VOLUME 3 NUMBER 1 FEBRUARY 2020)
Abstract:

Social media, now as a new place for the development of a public sphere. Specifically, Twitter has been frequently used by politicians and parties as a new way of communicating with the electorate. This study evaluated the use of Twitter by elected political office holders in Anambra State. The main objective of this study was to find out whether these  officers are exposed to Twitter and if they do, how many have Twitter handle and the frequency of usage as a political communication tool for engaging their electorate from 2015 to 2018. Anchored on Technological Determinism theory, the research made use of survey method and qualitative content analysis. It adopted census study since the population, being 46 was manageable. Findings revealed that out of the 46 officers, only 6 have Twitter handle and only 4 make frequent use of their twitter account to engage the electorate. The findings also revealed that there is low exposure and usage of Twitter by these officers. The researcher, therefore, recommended that elected political office holders in Anambra State should adopt Twitter as a contemporary political communication tool and strategy, in order to engage their electorates in political discourse.
